Gift of Age Project
Due 12/ 11 /2015
Background:
We are in the process of finishing the book, Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. The story is about a young boy named Billy growing up in the 1930’s and has a passion for dogs. Throughout the story, Billy goes on many adventures with his dogs. In the story, Billy has a special relationship with his grandfather that is like no other. Through this relationship Billy learns life skills that will last forever.
Project – Part 1:
Where the Red Fern Grows took place during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. The Dust Bowl was a combination of destructive wind and dust caused by a huge drought drying up the land. The Great Depression started when the stock market crashed in the 1930’s. Many people lost their jobs and homes.
Your child will learn more about life during the depression by preparing questions and interviewing someone who remembers the Great Depression or search the Internet to learn about the depression. This part of the project is just background info. Possible ways to share info: pictures with descriptions, small paragraph, bullet points of facts, timeline, a few slides in your final power point, etc.
*The bulk of the project and the most time will be spent on part 2.
*If the person you are interviewing grew up during the great depression, you can combine the two parts of the project.
